A strong, biting smell triggered a major firefighting operation in Witten on Wednesday evening. Around 60 emergency personnel went out to an industrial plant in the district of Hammertal. Six employees were examined by the ambulance service, two of them came to the hospital as a precaution. The emergency services gave the all-clear after air measurements.

The fire brigade cordoned off the factory premises and initially had the building completely evacuated. During measurements around the plant and in the surrounding area, a low concentration of ammonia was initially found.
Together with the technical manager of the company, the cause was then sought. Openly, a minimal, production-related gas leakage had occurred for a short time. However, a leak could be ruled out.

The factory hall was then ventilated. The fire brigade also generated a fine spray on the road to remove the remaining vapours from the air. According to the fire brigade, the measures had a rapid effect.

The use was supported by a special measuring vehicle from Gevelsberg. This enabled the operations management to continuously monitor the situation. After about three hours, the site was handed over to the plant's technical manager. During the deployment, the volunteer fire brigade and the situation service ensured basic protection for the urban area.
